Bioactive Products From Invasive Algae

The project aims at defining a sustainable management system for the infesting algae of the Orbetello lagoon (Grosseto, Tuscany), following a zero-waste multipath approach, where multiple value-added products for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, paper and agricultural sector are extracted from the biomass, which is currently landfilled as special waste. RE-CORD’s main task involves the last step of the multipath algae valorisation: the conversion of the residue from the former extraction processes into biochar for agriculture by means of slow pyrolysis, through an innovative pilot unit adopted for this scope. In addition, RE-CORD will also investigate the lab-scale hydrothermal carbonization of the whole algae for the simultaneous production of char and the extraction of bioactive substances.
