Since many years RE-CORD has developed a wide range of activities in the field of biofuels, from the study of row materials to the design and development of technology solutions for industrial applications, from support to policy-makers in the drafting of strategic plans to cooperation in reducing the fuels environmental impact.


RE-CORD has been working in the field of biofuels for many years carrying out a wide range of activities, from the studies of row materials to the production of sustainable biofuels,  to the design and development of technological solutions for industrial applications.

RE-CORD represents a partner that can support the policy-makers in the definition of strategic plans both domestically and internationally. Prof. Chiaramonti presided the technical secretariat of Leader for Sustainable Biofuels in 2012/2013 (http://www.sustainablebiofuelsleaders.com/wordpress/). RE-CORD is part of ICAO CAEP (Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection ) that aims to reduce the environmental impact of civil aviation.


LIFE-VOICE

The LIFE-VOICE project, supported by LIFE-EU program and coordinated by CREAR, ended in 2009, demonstrated the possibility of developing models, based both on short  supply chain and on industrial chain, for vegetable oils production  for energy and transport in rural areas. VOICE project was a first pioneering experience of using pure vegetable oil. Through the supply chain tested the project demonstrated the economical and environmental benefit of using pure vegetable oil directly as a fuel that, even though is still a niche application, anyhow it can represent a possible alternative (or better an integration) to the traditional fossil fuels. The project also demonstrated that the oil production is mainly a secondary supply chain of the proteins production chain for food and feed sectors (they represent about 2/3 of the output for each hectare).

BIOREFLY

The aviation industry considers aviation biofuels to be one of the primary means to reduce the carbon footprint of the industry. In this context, the BIORFLY (co-funded by the European Commission in the 7th Framework Programme) project will develop and build the first industrial pre-commercial lignin-to-jet fuel facility in Italy. The combined production of a high annual volume of cellulosic ethanol and lignin-based jet fuel through sustainable and innovative technologies will be the first step towards biofuel commercialization and market deployment.

RE-CORD is partner of BIOREFLY, with the target to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the fuel use through direct testing in its own pilot turbines . RE-CORD is also in charge to study the sustainability of the proposed production chain.

ITAKA

Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation (ITAKA) is a collaborative project framed in the implementation of the European Union policies, implementation of European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EIBI) and specifically aims to contribute to the fulfilment of some of the short-term (2015) EU Flight Path objectives. The ITAKA project is expected to support the development of aviation biofuels in an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable manner, improving the readiness of existing technology and infrastructures. This will be achieved through a first of its kind collaborative project in the EU, which has started the development of a full value-chain in Europe to produce sustainable drop-in Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids at large scale. The value chain will be fully demonstrated by testing the use of the biojet fuel produced in existing logistic systems and in normal flight operations in the EU. ITAKA is linking supply and demand by establishing a relationship under specific conditions between feedstock growers, biofuel producers, distributors and final users (airlines), encompassing the entire supply chain.

RE-CORD contributes to the project goals by investigating the possiblity to use Used Cooking Oils as sustainable feedstock. Innovative pyrolysis activities are also proposed as pre-treatment for the further bio-kerosene production.
